Boat building rules

  • Construct your boat with only cardboard boxes / tubes and coloured tape.

  • Use tape only for structural purposes such as seams or stress points.

  • Don't use water proofing aids such as coated or waxed cardboard, paint or glue, or lots of tape.

  • Don’t use metal fasteners such as screws, bolts, washers, staples.

  • Be creative - enhance your fantastic boat design with colourful decorations using small amounts of tape, paint etc. (Prizes awarded).

After some boat building inspiration?

Way back in 2020, three University of Tasmania engineering students; Isaac, Joseph and Dylan, accepted a challenge from Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten.

The challenge?

To build a cardboard boat capable of carrying both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to victory at the 2020 Soggy Bottom Cardboard Box Boat Regatta. Watch the video and see how that worked out!

Boat building can also be simple! Check out the gallery to see how a simple fridge box can be turned into a race winning boat.

Race Day Rules

  • Registration before the event is recommended. This assists in the scheduling of the program.

  • It is recommended that non-swimmers should wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Some PFD’s will be available for loan on the day but we recommend bringing your own if you have one.

  • Respect other teams and their boats — both off and on the water.

  • No purposeful sinking of other teams boats.

  • Most importantly… have FUN!
